"I think [we] expected to win the title. We took control of the game and ran with it," Head Coach Troy Hood said.
"We knew they (Illinois) would be tougher, but we are at the point that we expect to win."
On Saturday the Lions played the University of Missouri and won 12-5. They put the final touches on their championship Sunday when they beat Illinois 12-8.
The tournament's MVP was the Lions' Kyle Bazansky.
In the championship game Bazansky netted seven goals and one assist.
As for the regular season awards, Andrew Schroeder won the offensive player of the year, while Mike Coursault was the defensive player of the year.
This was the second year in a row that the Lions swept these prestigious awards.
"They (the awards) mean we are doing our job. I think that Lindenwood is great at attracting talent. I think we are also good at developing the talent we have. That is a compliment to all the coaching staffs for all the sports here," said Hood.
Next Tuesday, May 12, will start the MCLA National Championship Tournament, which runs through May 16. The Lions will play Sonoma State University.
They have yet to to get past the first round of the tournament, but their mentality is unaffected.
"Our goal is to win the first game. We are going to take it one game at a time," Hood said.
"We can't look ahead. I think our team understands that. We have to give our best efforts."
